Here are the products we use to create our ideal minimalist floor-sitting workspace, from the desk itself to the seating and accessories that make it work.

We do most of our work sitting on the floor, so naturally, floor-to standing desks are our desks of choice. There aren’t many options on the market, but thankfully the ones that do exist are quite good.

Lowdesk Pro (formerly known as Uppeal Design) was the first floor to standing desk we had the opportunity of trying (read our review). This may look like a regular adjustable standing desk, but it’s engineered to go as low as 42cm, which is low enough to accommodate floor sitting with a floor cushion.

Flow Desk by marinamantra is the newest floor to standing desk on the market (read our review). It uses a drastically different x-frame design that allows it to go even lower, down to 37cm. Overall, it’s a well-designed desk with plenty of appeal along with a few quirks of its own.

Which desk you prefer ultimately comes down to personal preference. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, so we’ve put together a detailed comparison of the two to help you decide which one is right for you.

If floor to standing desks are out of your budget, then consider looking at coffee tables. Before we upgraded, we used IKEA LISABO coffee tables (view alternative floor desks on: Amazon) with the legs shortened to around 33cm. They get the job done if you’re looking for a floor desk but don’t need it to double as a standing desk.

With a conventional desk setup, seating usually defaults to one option: an office chair. But when you work on the floor, you not only have different ways of sitting, there’s also an interesting range of seating options.

The IKUKO meditation bench from Bluecony has been a fantastic addition to our workspace. For the kneeling seiza position it’s designed for, it’s incredibly comfortable. The only drawback is that it doesn’t offer quite as many sitting positions as something like a floor cushion. The benches come in three heights: 16, 18 and 20 cm. So choose one based on how comfortable you are with sitting in this sort of a position.

Simple floor cushions like these ones from Venn Design are probably the most versatile option if you want to switch between different sitting positions. If you only want one piece of seating for your floor setup, a floor cushion is hard to beat for its simplicity and flexibility.

Venn Design air chairs are essentially balance balls wrapped in an aesthetic premium outer shell. They’re a good option if you want to sit at a more conventional desk height, while still allowing for movement and active sitting throughout the day.

Before this, we used floor chairs from Muji. (Try Amazon JP if they’re not officially available in your region, or view alternative floor chairs on Amazon.) They have a clean, understated look, and can be a good option if you prefer or require having back support. We no longer use them as we’ve found other seating options that better suit how we work, but we know a lot of people would find these floor chairs helpful for a start.

Movemate is a different kind of addition to a floor-to-standing setup. It’s an active standing board (like a balance board on steroids) that encourages movement while you work in a standing position.

We’re fortunate to have tried many of these options that land in the “luxury” segment of floor-living products, but you certainly don’t have to spend that much to reap most of the benefits.

There are plenty of more affordable options if you search for these terms: meditation benches, meditation stools, floor cushions, balance boards, etc.

Desk mats are not strictly necessary, but they’re an often overlooked component of a desk setup that helps to tie everything together visually.

Mat 2.0 by Lemur Design is one of our favorite options. It’s made from a blend of recycled leather and natural rubber, for a smooth, matte texture that feels fantastic to the touch.

Galen Leather’s desk mat is a more traditional option, made from vegetable-tanned full-grain leather. We were particularly drawn to their rich, dark brown colorway, which was surprisingly difficult to find elsewhere.

Previously, we used smaller desk pads from Grovemade, which are available in leather, wool, and linoleum. They’re also good options.

The Daring Run Polygon-7 is my keyboard of choice (may no longer be available, but its parent brand, Wind Studio, also has a bunch of custom keyboards with unique layouts at reasonable prices). Its compact 65% layout, combined with extra programmable keys on either side, strikes a balance between functionality and a minimal footprint.

I paired it with Mode Design’s Obscura keycaps for a classic yet modern aesthetic.

Bridge75 Plus by Shortcut Studio is a popular “entry-level” custom mechanical keyboard. It comes prebuilt in a 75% layout with a solid aluminium chassis, and sounds and feels great to type on right out of the box.

HL paired it with Swagkeys Foundation Keycaps for a subtle pop of color and a touch of playfulness.

Split keyboards can be another rabbit hole if you’re looking for a more ergonomic typing experience. Our favorite so far, without deviating too far from a conventional keyboard layout, is the Elim Elytra. It feels like a keyboard made by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts, and it works surprisingly well as a portable productivity tool because of how slim and light it is.

Another brand worth exploring is NocFree, which was our introduction to the world of split keyboards.

Protoarc EM11 NL is my current mouse of choice. It’s a surprisingly affordable vertical mouse that doesn’t feel cheap at all. However, in our experience, it’s best suited to medium-sized hands and larger. If you have smaller hands (e.g. it didn’t work for HL), we’d recommend checking the dimensions to make sure it suits you before purchasing.

Keychron M6 is our choice for a more traditional mouse. It has most of the features found on the popular Logitech MX Master series, while costing roughly half as much. It’s not going to wow in terms of build quality and ergonomics, but it’s a jack-of-all-trades that makes it an easy recommendation for a general-purpose mouse.

One more option we’ve personally tried and recommend is the Elecom EX-G Pro. It has an ergonomic shape and comes in different sizes to accommodate a wider range of hand sizes. Its angled design sits somewhere between a conventional and vertical mouse, making it a good alternative if you want some of the ergonomic benefits of a vertical mouse in a more traditional design.

For speakers, I like the Edifier M60 for its price to performance ratio (and clean aesthetic), and it delivers plenty of value for money without taking up much space. I have it connected to an Audient Evo 4 audio interface.

The Creative Pebble series, which HL uses in her setup, takes up even less space. It’s an incredibly budget-friendly option that delivers more than decent sound for general use.

When we don’t want to disturb each other with music or videos playing through our speakers, we switch to wireless earbuds such as the Earfun Air Pro 4 & Edifier Neodots.

Wireless earbuds are incredibly convenient, but their small, built-in batteries will eventually degrade and can quickly turn otherwise functional devices into e-waste. That’s why we chose models that not only sound good but also have relatively large battery capacities so that they can (hopefully) last longer.

FIFINE makes affordable gear that punches well above its price class. We use the K688 dynamic microphone mounted onto the BM88 low profile boom arm to record our voiceovers.
